It seems that somebody has replaced the O.J. in bridal-shower mimosas with jerk juice yet again. After receiving a Facebook message from a bride-to-be showing interest in her services, makeup artist Kristian Cardenas was bombarded with disrespectful comments regarding her sexual orientation — and by the same person!
Apparently, the bride introduced herself to Cardenas after she was recommended to her by a friend, and asked the Texas-based makeup artist for prices. Cardenas sent the bride-to-be a quote for a hair and makeup package, along with a link to her Facebook business page. She did not expect the text messages that followed.
“Are you gay?” asked the bride to be. Cardenas replied in the affirmative, asking in turn what her sexual orientation had to do with either the wedding or her services. The bride then proceeded to derogatorily explain why she wouldn’t be hiring Cardenas. “Oh i don’t want a gay person doing my wedding,” she replied, displaying an appalling level of discrimination and homophobia.
While undoubtedly shocked by such an affirmation, Cardenas didn’t let the bride’s rude and discriminatory attitude put her off. “okay that’s totally fine, you have a nice day!” she replied perfectly composed.
Yet the bride was by no means done with this conversation — she then explained to the makeup artist, in what cannot but be regarded as judgmental and presumptuous detail, why she chose not to work with her. “I still have more questions. How can you be a latina woman and be gay? You do know being gay is a sin correct,” said the bride, further making assumptions about Cardenas’ beliefs. “I will pray for you my friend. I’m sorry that you’ve chosen a path that’s going to send you straight to hell. I think you do beautiful makeup but i just can’t have someone who’s gay being apart of my special day. The wedding is in a church and i don’t want you walking into my church.”
The worst part of all? At the end of the conversation and after repeatedly insulting Cardenas, the bride ignorantly suggested that she’d hire her — provided she suddenly decided to stop being a lesbian. “If you at any chance change your mind about being gay let me know please so i can book you,” she said.
Such an attitude from the bride-to-be isn’t only disrespectful, but completely ignorant and decidedly rude. Cardenas also admitted to having been hurt by the bride’s words, especially since she had only recently come out to the world and has been struggling with facing acceptance in her small town. “I wanted to post [this conversation] for my friends and family because about a month and a half ago, I came out to everyone on social media. I was tired of hiding who I was. And when I had such a positive reaction to me sharing who I was I felt like everyone just needed a little taste of my reality,” she told Allure.
After the conversation went viral, the bride in question has reached out to Cardenas to apologize, but not without defending her position. “She apologized, but told me it was her wedding and her choice to choose who she wanted doing makeup and hair, and that her beliefs shouldn’t have hurt my feelings,” explained Cardenas. “I understand where she’s coming from. I just wish she would have been a little nicer about it,” she continued, displaying the level of tolerance she herself deserved.
This isn’t the first instance of outrageous behavior from a bride-to-be. Just a few days ago, another bride demanded that one of her guests covers her tatoos and ‘fixes’ her blue hair color, claiming that they ‘clashed’ with her wedding theme. Not to mention the bride who asked her friend to postpone her breast augmentation until after the wedding. The reason? She didn’t want her friend to look too attractive.
